Bound in half calf with marbled boards.The works of Philip Dormer Stanhope, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, a British statesman, diplomat, man of letters, and an acclaimed wit of his time. Comprised of the letters and articles of Philip Dormer Stanhope, alongside a memoir of his life and an appendix containing sixteen characters of great personages and letters written by Stanhope. Collected and edited by Matthew Maty, a Dutch physician and writer of Huguenot background. This collection of miscellaneous works marks the first appearance of Maty’s memoir.Volume I contains the memoirs of Lord Chesterfield with a detailed index. Volume II contains miscellaneous pieces including Fog’s Journal, on Common Sense, and the World. Volume III contains Lord Chesterfield’s letters to his friends, written in the original French, with an English translation. Volume IV contains Lord Chesterfield’s letters to his friends, with letters to Solomon Dayrolles of Henley-Park and an appendix on Characters by Lord Chesterfield. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume and three additional plates to volume I. Lacking one plate to volume I. CONDITION Bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound, with slight rubbing and bumping, causing slight loss to the extremities and the spine. Joints are cracked, with reinforcement to the hinges internally. Front board to volume IV is tenderly held, despite tape reinforcement. Endpapers have been renewed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with the occasional spot or handling mark, and age toning, as is usual. Overall Condition: Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine – Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed – Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good – Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good – Meaning not very good.
