You are bidding on one AS-IS J P Storer wood smoothing or coffin plane as pictured. There are lots of condition issues, so please keep reading.The body is marked “J P STORER BRUNSWICK ME” and with owner initials “TJS” on the front end, and with the same initials on the back end.The iron is marked “MOULSON BROTHERS WARRANTED CAST-STEEL” with their logo in the middle. The chip breaker has a similar MOULSON marking, although only about half is legible. Overall length of the body is about 9″. Width of the iron is about 1-7/8″, and overall length is about 6-5/8″. It is a tapered iron, about .210″ thick near the sharp edge, and about .080″ thick near the upper edge. I’m not certain what the wood is. The wood is very grainy and wants to split easily. My guess is a dark lignum vitae or something similar. The wedge is obviously a different wood than the body.The plane including the iron weighs 2 pounds 4.3 ounces on my postal scale. Joshua P Storer made planes in Brunswick, Maine, from 1854 to 1874. Please see the book American Wooden Planes 5th Edition for more information about him, and it rates this mark (the B mark) as 3 stars for rarity. It notes that he was at times also a sparmaker and stair rail maker. It also notes that he was known to make planes of either lignum vitae or beech. Lots of condition issues — both of the “wings” that hold the wedge are partially broken off, although the wedge still seems to hold the iron. There is a short crack on the left side at the left rear corner of the throat. There is a reglued crack that runs from the right rear corner of the throat at the top of the right side all the way down to the the throat opening on the sole. There is an old repair at the front of the throat on the sole. There are a variety of checks and cracks in the wood, mostly at the ends, and some chips along the upper side rails. And there are a variety of scratches and chips in or along the edges of the sole. The wedge shows wear around the upper end and at the two tips. The iron has lots of casting roughness, lots of patina (color), and a bit of pitting. The upper end is peened over a bit. The center nut in the chip breaker is just starting to show a crack as shown in the last picture. The iron and the wedge both appear to be original to the plane. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it’s not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20″ long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30″ long, because those longer packages won’t fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights.
