Boulder Field; Yankee Boy Basin, Colorado. (1975) This poster sized, 500 square inch print was made on an Epson 9000 series printer (UltraChrome inks) at 385 DPI on a bright white, medium weight paper (11 mil or 65 lbs) featuring a ‘lustre’ (or ‘pearl’) fine-grained textured glossy finish. The print image area size is nominally 20″x25½” — my ruler says 19 11/16″ x 25 7/16″. There is a whitespace border on all four sides for easier handling; it’s 1″ top and bottom, 5/8″ on the left side, and 25/32″ on the right side. [Don’t laugh – I need to know these numbers to calculate a mailing weight.] I didn’t do the initial trimming, so let me know if you’d like me to equalized them all at 5/8″. The original negative was scanned at 2400 DPI, which yields a 100+ Megapixel image (and these are real pixels, not Bayer array or manufacturer hyped pixels). The scan has been carefully de-spotted and retouched at the pixel level to remove all flaws, and then it was given custom tone curve digital selenium toning. The overall look is reminiscent of but much better than I used to get in the darkroom on silver-based papers. Because of the toning applied, the print image is not strictly black ink, but is composed of some colored inks. To prevent any change of tone over time, especially if displayed in strong light, I strongly recommend framing behind “conservation” glass (UV block) or having someone knowledgeable overcoat the mounted print with a UV blocking lacquer. With do-it-yourself or Hobby Lobby framing you can have a great work of photo art that looks like it cost $800 or $1000 at the gallery opening for a fraction of the cost. Taking Details Calumet CC-400 4×5 camera. Graflex Optar 135mm f/4.5 lens. Plus-X Pan Professional Film (#4147) developed in D-76 1:1. The second and third photos show at 1:1 scale all the detail visible in an area above center. Yes, those are columbine flowers. Yankee Boy Basin is famous for its wildflowers, but I like it for its rockslides and boulder fields. This was one of my first good negatives… #94. I’d been using my 4×5 for some 5-6 months. It took that long to learn the ropes and work out all the kinks in the process. If this 6¼x size is not to your liking please message me about custom sizing up to a wall-size maximum of ~60″ (~15x) on the smaller dimension. Shipping cost includes sturdy new mailing tube (about $4-$5) and comparable USPS parcel service (~1 week). Besides large format B&W I also have large format Color, as well as high resolution digital mosaics (or ‘panos’) to list. Be sure to check back every so often. There’s a lot of good photography out there, but maybe I’ve got the image which really resonates and that you just have to have, the one that sticks in your mind. Most my traffic comes from word-of-mouth and referrals, so be sure to mention me to anyone who you think might be interested in, especially, large format photography. Note: Even with B&W images, monitors and screens differ from prints in how the image is made visible. The medium here requires my scans to be de-enlarged, reduced, and compressed ~200x in size (area – from 100 Mp to ½Mp) in order to be electronically displayed. So I can almost certainly guarantee the actual prints will look much better in hand compared to on here, though maybe not 200x. They might look somewhat different but this is unavoidable.
