Amati Pestini Copy Circa 1900 You are invited to purchase a very fine antique handcrafted Johann Baptiste Schweitzer German 4/4 (full size) Trade violin. This violin, based on the historical pattern of Hieronymus Amati Pestini is slightly modified in the Tyrolese manner. It has been expertly repaired, reconditioned and updated with several new parts and modern strings (details below) and is ready to be played again and enjoyed by an appreciative buyer. It will be shipped in a vintage hard case as described below. No bow is included. This violin was most likely made in a small factory in Marneukirchen, a town in the Vogtland region of Germany in the free state of Saxony at the southeastern part of Germany directly on the border with Czechlosavakia (now known as the Czech Republic). Based in part on the known characteristics of similar trade violins attributed to this particular maker, its likely source location and on its overall physical condition upon receipt prior to being repaired/refurbished, we can conservatively date this instrument to circa 1900. This violin bears three (3) printed labels found inside the body as follows: 1. Under the bass side (left) F-hole one finds this printed label – See Image: Joh. Bapt. Schweitzer fecit at forman Hieronym Amati Pestini, 1813 2. Also under this same F-hole one finds this printed repair label with the first two digits printed as 18 and the last two digits of the date hand written in as 73 (thus, 1873) – See Image: reparirt von Wilhelm Friedel, Dresden anno 1873 3. Finally, under the treble (right) F-hole one finds a third but incomplete repair label with the date hand written in as 1892 – See Image: …… Channot ……1892 London E.C. NOTE: Complete labels in similar violins from the same source area normally read: Reparied by, Joseph H. Channot Lugate Hill – July 1892 London E. C. Unfortunately, as most astute antique/vintage violin collectors and enthusiasts know, all of these labels are “fake” in that they are designed to elevate the violin’s age making the instrument appear even older than it is. But, on the other hand, they do help us to identify the general historical type and style of the instrument that was intended by the talented factory makers in Germany. This violin has some features that are commonly shared by most Schweitzer trade instruments including the following: * A warm amber-brown varnish over a golden ground. * Antiquing marks placed by the maker in the usual way seen in Saxon made instruments. * A fake neck graft consisting of a fine etched black line that goes from the area in front of the E peg to the other side below the G peg (See image). It is meant to simulate that the neck has been changed while keeping the original scroll. Note: Some violins may also show some fake cracks on the top plate. * One piece Maple back (see accompanying images). Note: Some reportedly have a two piece back, but the one piece back is most common. * Three (3) alignment pins on the back – one at the top near the button and two at the bottom (See image). Note: On the refurbished violin, the bottom two pins are under the lower brace for the chin rest and so are not visible. * Sound varies from good to very good making them one of the better German trade instruments available. MEASUREMENTS: * Length Overall (LoA): 23.5″ * Length of the body (LoB): 14″ * Rib Height: 1 1/4″ * Max Width of Upper Bout: 6 3/8″ * Avg. Width at Waist or C-Bout: 4 1/4″ * Max. Width of Lower Bout: 8″ GENERAL CONSTRUCTION DETAILS: * Two part spruce top. The straight spruce grain is fine and widens at the perifery of the outline. * One part flamed Maple back (see images). Note: In addition to the flamed pattern, the back shows a vertical long oval natural grain marking in the Maple. * Ribs of flamed Maple to match back. * Well carved scroll with attention to detail. * F-holes are relatively thin and elegant. * All four corners blocked on inside with original willow linings intact. * Heel is well mounted and all seams are right and tight. NATURE OF REPAIRS & REFIT: This antique violin was received in relatively poor, dirty, but repairable cosmetic condition and with several missing parts including pegs, strings, nut, bridge, chin rest and tailpiece. Our immediate observation was that it was evidently played quite a lot in the past (See BEFORE & AFTER RESTORATION composite image). Upon our receipt of this violin for repair/restoration, the entire instrument was cleaned of residual rosin, dust, dirt and grime using tap water and, in some cases, mineral spirits, on a soft rag, but avoiding loss of the original varnish. All exterior surfaces were wet sanded using 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Brown touchup varnish was applied to all wear areas in the top, bottom and sides and a coat of French Polish was applied to protect the instrument. As the accompanying images will attest, it now has a very beautiful and appealing physical appearance. We initially intended to remove the top plate, but it appears that a glue system other than Hide Glue was used in the past making removal very difficult and problematic. So we did not attempt to remove the top plate for fear of permanently damaging the instrument. Instead, we used a LED inspection light inserted through the f-holes to verify that all four corners are blocked and to check the position and condition of the original soundpost. There appeared to be a crack in the top plate on the right side of the lower bout of the instrument, although this may have been a “fake crack” added by the maker in the antiquing process. The crack did not appear to go all the way through the top plate, so we were able to fill this crack with Hide Glue thereby stabilizing it. We noted that there was a hairline crack in the peg box above the A peg hole. We decided to do a pegbox repair centered around the A peg hole to prevent this from enlarging or breaking open in the future. That area is now fully stabilized (see image of the repair). The original Ebony fingerboard was wet sanded with 400 grit, 600 grit & 800 grit sandpaper followed by 1500 grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface and checked with a standard template to match the proper cross-section profile. The original saddle was retained. A new nut was glued onto the violin and carefully shaped and prepared to accept new strings. A new replacement Ebony tail pin was added. Finally, a new Ebony chin rest and a new Ebony tailpiece were added. The pegbox was fitted with new Wittner Finetune geared Pegs (Made in Germany). These geared pegs negate the need for fine tuners on the tailpiece as they are permanently set within the pegbox (no slippage) and have an 8:1 gear ratio, making for very precise tuning. Only the central nurrled spool segment of the peg rotates. So once the Wittner pegs are set, they are not designed to be adjusted or removed from the pegbox. (Please see the Wittner website for more details). Finally the violin was fitted with high-end Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Medium Strings (Made in Germany) and a new pre-carved Viotti bridge was added to complete the setup of the instrument (See image). All of the aforementioned repairs and more modern upgrades in the pegs, nut, chin rest, tailpiece and strings have resulted in a fully restored and functional antique violin from circa 1900, but with some modern enhancements so the violin performs at its best with modern synthetic strings. Thus, an antique instrument that could have easily been lost to time has been reborn to live a second life in the present. It is now ready for the next fine player, who could be you, to put it to use. SOUND AND PLAYABILITY: Most players of this class of Schweitzer trade violin describe them as having a sound that is full, powerful and inviting with an excellent response off the strings. The bottom end has a rich, mature tone and the top end rings well, both clean and clear. While these violins are used across many musical genres from classical to folk, it is reported that Country and Bluegrass violin/fiddle musicians especially love the unique sound that Schweitzer trade violins provide. Hopefully its new owner will find it to be lively, open and eminently playable in any venue. HARD CASE: This violin will be shipped in a vintage hard case that was received with the violin itself (See composite image). Given its overall appearance, this case appears to be original to the violin likely from circa 1900 as well. It had some exterior damage, which we have since repaired to a limited degree, and the hardware also has signs of rust. Nevertheless, it will be protective of the refurbished violin for shipping purposes. The violin will be very carefully packed so as to prevent any movement while in transit to its new owner. After receipt of the violin, its new owner may elect to invest in a new case as this fine antique instrument certainly deserves that level of care and attention. BRIEF HISTORY OF JOHANN BAPTISTE SCHWEITZER VIOLIN MAKER & HIS TRADE SUCCESSORS: Based in part on information found in the publication entitled, “Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers” by William Henley, Johann Baptiste Schweitzer was an actual violin maker who was born in Vienna, Austria in 1790. He was a pupil of Franz Geissenhof, a well known luthier and key founder of the 19th-century Viennese school. Schweitzer ultimately settled in Budapest, Hungary in 1825. He made many fine instruments, copying most of the Cremonese makers, but had a preference for the Amatese model. Original Schweitzer violins are extremely rare. After Schweitzer’s death in 1865, his name, label and violin construction style were copied by many factory merchants in Saxony and the Tyrol region of Germany and were sold throughout Europe and even exported to the USA. Schweitzer trade violins are generally known for exceptional sound quality compared to other trade violins of the period.
