The MEMPHIS Milano brand is managed nowadays by Alberto Bianchi Albrici and still produces iconic objects created by the group between 1981 and 1988 LAUREL — a masterpiece table lamp by Peter Shire from 1985 — is a colorful table lamp in coated metal. It has the appearance of a small robot that seems to come straight out of a cartoon, symmetrical and eccentric. The overall structure of the Laurel table lamp relies on a nimble interlock of geometric figures of different hues, pierced by metal spikes. A creative juxtaposition that makes Laurel an intriguing luminous object, adding identity to any habitat. ABOUT Peter Shire: He was was born in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles, where he lives and works. He studied ceramics at the Chouinard Institute in LA before opening his own studio in 1972. Inspired by the Bauhaus, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Shire’s work aims to bridge the gap between fine art and industrial design. With his early works he transformed the traditional teapot design into a sculptural construction of geometric shapes, edges and pastel enamels. His works attracted the attention of Ettore Sottsass who invited him to collaborate with Memphis, for which he designed two of the most iconic products: the Brazil table (1981) and the Bel Air armchair (1982) – available to pre-order in our shop. In the 1980s, Shire began producing glass and metal furniture and objects. In the same years he worked in the design team of the American Institute of Architects for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and designed some public sculptures in Los Angeles and other cities in California. His work can be found in several museum collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the MAD Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. He has exhibited in numerous group and individual exhibitions in Milan, Paris, Tokyo and Sapporo. About MEMPHIS Milano: The Memphis Milano or the Memphis Group design movement, born in 1981 under the vision of Ettore Sottsass and a collective of young designers and architects, became a defining cultural phenomenon of the 1980s. By challenging the established norms of design and turning conventional ideas about living spaces on their head, Memphis revolutionized creative and commercial logics. Sottsass, the backbone of the movement, led the charge in reimagining design through unconventional shapes, bold patterns, and innovative materials, pushing the creative boundaries of the industry. Memphis became a symbol of New Design, and its influence continues to resonate across various sectors of production and beyond, leaving a lasting mark on contemporary culture.
