[1502] Denis Roce (Paris), 4 1/8 x 5 5/8 inches tall modern marbled paper-covered boards over black calf spine, refreshed endpapers, engraved title page, rubricated in red throughout, [76] leaves, collates a-i8 k4, complete except for original blank endpapers. Title with chip to upper corner repaired. 1/8-inch wormhole to first two leaves, catching a couple of letters on second leaf. First several leaves soiled and stained and with some light chipping to margins. Some very light and faded water-stains to a few pages, and a number of mostly early ink marks, as well as some mostly marginal soiling or staining. Overall, a nice copy of this rare issue. The Universal Short Title Catalog (No. 142822) locates only two copies worldwide – one at the British Library, and the other at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbuttel, Germany. Although the present work is no longer considered to be by Bernard of Clairvaux, it was in the 15th and 16th centuries a popular work aimed to teach “how man by knowledge and understanding of himself may know god” (English edition of 1496). Between 1475 and 1499, 23 editions were printed. Particularly during the “Silver Age” of the Cistercians (the late twelfth and thirteenth centuries), pseudepigraphical compositions bearing the name of Bernard flourished. Important for the history of monasticism and, more broadly, of Christian spiritual formation and practice, these writings interpreted, appropriated, transformed, and applied Saint Bernard of Clairvaux’s authentic works, transmitting them to new audiences. The printer and publisher Denis Roce came from Scotland to Paris where he was active in the book trade from 1490-1517. The figure of the dog in his device indicates alertness, while the rose tree is a pun on his name.
