eBay RORSTRAND RARE Blue Fire (Bla Eld) “Red Fire” 19 cm Dessert Plates – À la Carte On offer are five (5) extremely rare Blue Fire dessert/salad plates (assietter) in the red colorway (Röd Eld). Each plate is being sold individually and measures approximately 7 ½ inches in diameter (19 cm). The listed price is for one plate. Debuting in 1951, the Blue Fire service was designed by Rörstrand’s Hertha Bengtson, who purportedly named her immensely popular design – noted for its striking herringbone/chevron pattern – after a wildflower common to Öland, an island off Sweden’s southeast coast. The “Red Fire” line (or Röd Eld) was not produced for as long or with as much depth as the Blå Eld. The tea and coffee services were replicated in Red Fire, but not all of the dinner plates and serveware pieces were made available in most markets in this beautiful red glaze. Collectors have, rightfully, hoarded what few pieces have survived, making it all the more exciting when any of the Röd Eld pieces are up for auction. As always, my recommendation for colored plates such as this is to protect their surfaces by using them as underplates for white service items that aren’t generally paired with an underplate — such as deep soup plates or an all-white cup-and-saucer-set. Condition Report: This entire collection is in excellent vintage condition. There is no apparent evidence of damage or repair to any item in this lot. Each plate has been examined under oblique lighting, and while some plates have a slightly darker tone than others in this collection, there is no evidence of crazing (craquelure) that I could find. All edges are smooth and free of fleabites. Because these are dessert/salad plates, utensil marks are to be expected. But I am happy to report that no one plate is overrun with such marks; and where marks are present, they are not deep or distracting. (Most marks are only visible near the center medallion or during an oblique tilt.) Each plate has been assigned a number and is discussed in more detail below: Plate #1 (Pictures 2-4): The glazing here is very light and shows the herringbone relief beautifully. There are very few visible utensil marks on the display side. There is an inconsequential scratch noted on the underside on the rim of the plate, leftward, away the footring where the backstamp is present (Picture 4, 10 o’clock). This plate is numbered and marked “Rörstrand Inc” and was manufactured in 1954. Plate #2 (Pictures 5-8): Similar to Plate #1, the glazing treatment is light and allows the herringbone relief to really shine through. There are few visible utensil marks on the display side, but there is a tad more wear on the glaze, particularly toward the center (Picture 6). (Again, if viewing the plate normally — and not critically — many of these observations would go unnoticed.) There is an inconsequential diagonal scratch scratch noted on the underside of the rim of the plate, leftward, away from the footring where the backstamp is present (Picture 7). There is also a raised pinpoint “glaze pop” that “reads white” noted on the underside (exaggerated in macro, Picture 8). This plate is numbered and marked “Rörstrand Inc” and was manufactured in 1954. Plate #3 (Pictures 9-12): Similar to Plate #1, the glazing treatment is light and shows the herringbone relief beautifully. There are few visible utensil marks on the display side. (Macro and oblique views are provided in Pictures 10 & 11). Apart from the expected kiln marks, the underside is unremarkable, save for a very small area along the footring that is underglazed (“a glaze skip,” Picture 12, one o’clock). This 4mm underglazing anomaly is not a chip or glaze erosion, as it is entirely smooth to the touch. This plate is numbered and marked “Rörstrand Sweden” and was manufactured in 1957. Plate #4 (Pictures 13-16): This plate is has a slightly darker tone than the previous three, mostly toward the center of the plate. Oblique lighting doesn’t reveal a plethora of utensil marks, but a few that do exist are long (Picture 15). There are a few inconsequential, microscopic “pinpoints” in the glaze on the reverse side of the plate, all along the outer rim away from the backstamp (Picture 16 – 8, 11 and 12 o’clock). This plate is numbered and marked “Rörstrand Sweden” and was manufactured in 1957. Plate #5 (Pictures 17-20): Similar to Plate #4, this plate has a slightly darker hue than the first three plates. It is also the plate with the most heft in the collection, weighing approximately 282 grams (compared to an average of 255 grams). This plate has the most visible utensil marks, but even so, most marks are small and only visible on an oblique tilt (Picture 19). The underside has one kiln mark that reads “whiter” than the other two. There is also a small, inconsequential scratch right along the lower portion of the backstamp (Picture 20). This plate is numbered and marked “Rörstrand Inc” and was manufactured in 1954. Shipping: The listed shipping is for buyers in the contiguous United States.
