Dust jacket is in POOR/FAIR condition; w/wear (creases, rips, scratches, scuffed edges, stains, cut corners on inside flaps, and inscription on back inside flap) – see picsDimensions: 5.5″ (W) x 1″ (D) x 8″ (H)Published in 1951 (2nd Edition), by Doubleday & Company (New York)221 pages totalWhen Dave Kerchival stepped in to protect old Bill Yeager from the Hendrons and the Ballards – he earned himself a ranch. At the time, of course, he knew nothing of it, but later that day, when Bill Yeager was dry-gulched, he lived just long enough to make a will leaving the Lazy Y to Dave. Yeager died because he had refused to close the drive trail which separated the Ballards’ ranch from the Hendrons’. Now Kerchival stood between the two outfits, and he too was marked for death. When Mel Rhodes, Yeager’s lawyer, was murdered and the will stolen, Kerchival had to rely on force, not law, to hold the Lazy Y. In the warfare that followed, he had cause to remember Rhodes’s warning: “Ride with your chin on your shoulder and keep off the top of bare ridges. You’re riding in a dead man’s saddle.”L.P. Holmes (AKA Matt Stuart, Dave Hardin and Perry Westwood), born Llewellyn Perry Holmes, 1895-1988, was the author of a number of outstanding Western novels, including Somewhere They Die, which received a 1955 Spur Award from the Western Writers of America.
